The Cable Pool Incident
I stood on the diving board, toes curled around the rough edge, heart pounding like my phone was about to blow up with notifications. Jordan was by the pool, his avocado swim trunks hanging just right on his hips. I'd been crushing on him since seventh period algebra, and today—finally—I'd make my move.
Then my brother decided to channel his inner spirit animal.
"I'm a BEAR!" Lucas roared, barreling toward me like he'd escaped from a nature documentary. "A fierce, pool-dominating bear!"
He crashed into my legs. I flew sideways, hand instinctively grabbing the thick black CABLE snaking across the deck—my dad's prized internet connection, his precious link to the football game streaming inside.
SNAP.
I hit the water in an explosion of chlorine and humiliation. When I surfaced, gasping, the entire pool party was dead silent. Then Lucas, soaking wet and grinning like he'd just won the lottery, yelled, "That's how bears POOL their resources! Get it? Pool? Like... pool party?"
I wanted to evaporate. Right there. Become chlorine vapor.
But then Jordan was beside me in the water, wiping hair from his eyes. "That was... actually kind of epic."
I stared. "I snapped my dad's cable."
"Yeah, but you flew, Maya. You literally FLEW." His eyes crinkled. "Plus, Lucas's bear impression? Peak chaos energy. My family's so boring, we don't even have good stories."
My dad was already marching toward the deck, face like a thunderstorm. But as I dog-paddled away from judgment, Jordan tossed me a pool noodle.
"Bear with me," he whispered, grinning. "I think we're about to witness a legendary parental lecture. And I want a front row seat... with you."
Maybe humiliation wasn't fatal. Maybe sometimes, you just had to bear the awkwardness, embrace the chaos, and see where the current took you.
