The Cable Mission
Leo crouched behind the oak tree in Mrs. Gable's backyard, his heart doing that stupid fluttery thing it always did when he was doing something he shouldn't. The **cable** snaked through the grass beside him—a black ethernet cord he'd "borrowed" from his dad's home office setup.
His mission: **spy** on the cool kids' hangout spot behind the abandoned garage. Six months into freshman year, and Leo was still practically invisible at Northwood High. His best friend Sam said he needed to stop being such a wallflower and actually learn how the popular crew operated.
"You're like a private investigator gathering intel," Sam had said, handing Leo a pair of binoculars. "That's not weird. That's strategic."
Right. Strategic.
A calico **cat** darted past Leo's sneaker, making him jump. Mrs. Gable's cat, Mango, was always on patrol. The cat paused, giving him that judgy look cats perfected, then disappeared behind the shed.
Then he heard them—Jenna, Marcus, and their crew. Leo adjusted his binoculars, feeling ridiculous. They were just sitting on the old stone wall, laughing. Nothing dramatic. No evil plots.
"Dude, you should've seen it," Marcus was saying. "My neighbor's **dog**, Buster, went absolutely feral yesterday. Got into something crazy."
Leo inched closer, the cable tangling around his ankle. Great. Now he was literally tied to his spy mission. He was about to free himself when something rustled in the bushes near the popular kids.
Everyone froze.
"What was that?" Jenna whispered.
A **fox** burst from the undergrowth—red fur gleaming, tail streaming behind it. It stopped, looked right at Leo hiding behind his tree, eyes gleaming with something like amusement, then bolted toward the woods.
"Whoa," Marcus breathed. "Did you see that?"
"There's someone over there," Jenna said, pointing directly at Leo's tree.
Leo's stomach dropped.
"Leo?" Marcus called. "Is that you?"
He considered making a run for it. But the cable was still wrapped around his ankle, and faceplanting would make everything worse. So he stood up, face burning, feeling like the biggest loser on the planet.
"Were you... spying on us?" Jenna asked, sounding more curious than angry.
"No! I mean, yes, but—" Leo groaned. "I was just—"
"Setting up some kind of trap?" Marcus gestured to the cable.
Leo looked at the ethernet cord, then at them. "It's a long story."
Jenna started laughing. Not mean-girl laughing. Actually laughing. "Dude, are you serious? You're spying on us with ethernet cable? That's kinda legendary."
"Pretty creative," Marcus agreed. "Hey, you coming to my party Friday? You should bring Sam."
Leo stood there, cable still wrapped around his sneaker, completely confused.
"Yeah," he heard himself say. "We'll be there."
Walking home, Leo untangled the cable from his ankle. Mango the cat watched from a porch, looking distinctly unimpressed. But Leo didn't care. Sometimes the stupidest plans led to the best outcomes—even when they involved ethernet cables, nosy animals, and almost getting caught by a fox.
