The Cable Man's Confession

The cable guy was thirty minutes late, and Elena's patience had frayed like the coaxial cable dangling from her living room wall. She sat on her velvet sofa, bare feet pressing into the **palm**-frond rug she'd bought on that ill-fitted trip to Tulum with Marcus—the trip where their marriage had quietly started to unravel.

"Sorry about the wait," the cable guy said, stepping inside. His **hat** was already off, revealing sandy hair and eyes that held the particular weariness of someone who spent his days entering strangers' homes. "I'm Daniel."

"Elena." She gestured toward the cable mess. "My husband—soon-to-be ex-husband—cut the cord before he moved out."

Daniel worked efficiently, large hands stripping wires with practiced ease. Elena watched him, admiring the concentrated furrow of his brow, the way his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms glistening with sweat. She hadn't been this aware of a man's body in years.

Her **cat**, Binx, wound between Daniel's legs, purring loudly. Daniel smiled down at him. "I had a cat once. Left her with my ex."

"The story of our lives," Elena said softly. "Everything gets left behind."

When Daniel finished, he lingered at the door. "You know, I play **padel** at the club on Tuesdays. If you ever wanted to forget about everything for an hour..."

The invitation hung between them—weightless and impossibly heavy. Elena saw the reflection of her own loneliness in his eyes, the desperate hope of two people who'd been hollowed out by loss and were foolish enough to think they might fill each other's emptiness.

"Tuesday," she said, her voice barely steady. "What time?"

"Seven."

She watched him walk to his truck, already wondering if she'd actually go, already knowing she desperately would. Some cable connections were never meant to be cut.
