The Cable Incident
Maya's palms were sweating. Like, actually sweating. She wiped them on her jeans for the third time, leaving dark streaks on the denim. Great. Now she was nervous AND her favorite jeans were ruined.
Her hair was already a disaster—she'd spent forty-five minutes trying to perfect those "effortless waves" she saw on TikTok, but instead ended up looking like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Her curly hair had a mind of its own, and today it was apparently feeling rebellious.
"You ready?" Jordan called from downstairs. "The gang's all waiting on the Discord call!"
"One second!" Maya yelled back, frantically adjusting her ring light. She had everything set up perfectly for their group's weekly Friday game stream. Well, almost everything.
The HDMI cable connecting her laptop to the monitor was being weird. Again. It kept flickering in and out like it was undecided about whether to work today. Maya jiggled it, and the screen went completely black.
"No, no, no," she whispered. She tried the other end of the cable. Still black. Her palms were sweating even more now. If she missed the stream, her friends would never let her hear the end of it. They'd already been roasting her all week about that time she accidentally called her math teacher "mom" during class.
She crawled under her desk, hair escaping from her clip and falling in her face. The cable was tangled with about three others—her phone charger, her headphone cord, and something she didn't even recognize. How did this happen? She swore she'd organized everything just yesterday.
"Maya? You there?" Jordan's voice came through her phone speaker. "We can see you're offline, lol."
She gently tugged the cable, trying to free it without unplugging anything important. Her fingers were slippery from her sweaty palms, making everything ten times harder. Finally, with one last careful pull, the HDMI cable came loose, trailing behind her like a stubborn snake.
She plugged it back in properly. The monitor flickered to life.
"Sorry!" she shouted, jumping back into her gaming chair. "Technical difficulties! You know how it is."
"Nice save," Jordan said, and she could hear the smile in his voice. "Your hair looks... wild today. In a good way."
Maya's face burned. She quickly smoothed down the frizz. "Thanks. I'm going for the 'I just rolled out of bed but still look amazing' aesthetic."
"Nailed it," Jordan laughed.
As she adjusted her headset and saw all her friends pop up on her screen, Maya realized something: maybe her palms were sweaty, maybe her hair was messy, and maybe her cables were constantly tangled. But somehow, this was exactly where she was supposed to be.
