The Cable Hat Incident

Marcus's hair was doing that thing again—that awkward flippy thing that made him look like he'd just rolled out of bed, except he'd spent twenty minutes with gel trying to fix it. Standing outside Maya's house, baseball glove tucked under his arm like a security blanket, he felt like the world's biggest poser. Who wore a hat inside their backpack for three weeks just in case?

The front door swung open and there she was, holding her cat—Mr. Whiskers, who looked at Marcus with what he swore was judgment.

"You ready?" Maya asked, and Marcus's brain short-circuited. The cable guy working on the utility pole behind her chose that moment to shout down, "HEY KID, NICE HAT!"

Except Marcus wasn't wearing a hat. His hair was just doing THAT thing.

"I... um... what?" Maya stared at him.

"The cable guy," Marcus managed, feeling his face burn. "He thought... never mind."

Mr. Whiskers meowed.

Maya burst out laughing, but not in the mean-girl way. In the way that made her nose crinkle. "Your hair IS pretty epic today. It's got... personality."

"That's one word for it," Marcus muttered, already reaching for his backpack where the actual hat waited like a coward.

"Don't." She stepped closer, and his heart did something physically concerning. "It looks good. Like, actually good. I mean it."

The cable guy shouted something else about connectors, but Marcus barely heard. For the first time in three weeks of overthinking every interaction, of practicing conversations in his mirror, of hiding under hats and hoodies—he just stood there, messy hair and all, and let himself believe maybe he didn't have to perform everything perfectly.

"So," Maya said, "baseball? You pitching or just watching me strike out?"

"Both," he said, and something in his chest unlocked. "Definitely both."

They walked toward the park, and he didn't once reach for the hat in his bag.
