The Cable Car to Magic Island

Lily clutched her tabby cat, Mochi, as the old cable car creaked and swayed above the sparkling blue water below. The morning sun made the ocean glitter like diamonds.

"Don't be scared," her grandmother said, squeezing her hand. "The cable has held for fifty years. It's how we visit the magic island."

Lily had heard stories about the mysterious island across the water, where magical creatures lived. But she'd never been brave enough to ride the swaying cable car until today.

As they reached the middle of the water, something strange appeared on the island below. A green figure shuffled slowly along the beach. Its arms hung loosely, and it moved in a jerky, stumbling way.

"Is that... a zombie?" Lily whispered, hiding behind Mochi. The cat purred calmly, sensing no danger.

Her grandmother chuckled. "That's Zara! She's not scary at all. She's a zombie, yes — but the kindest zombie you'll ever meet. She was cursed by a grumpy wizard, but she still has the biggest heart."

The figure looked up and waved clumsily. Then, to Lily's surprise, Zara reached into her pocket and pulled out a beautiful shell, placing it gently on a rock. She was making the beach pretty for visitors.

"She spends every day collecting shells and arranging them into paths so no one trips," her grandmother explained. "Being a zombie didn't stop her from being helpful."

When the cable car docked, Lily approached cautiously. Zara's green face broke into a warm smile. She handed Lily a perfect white shell.

"Thank you," Lily said bravely. Mochi rubbed against Zara's leg, purring.

Zara couldn't speak well — her curse made words come out slowly — but her kindness needed no language. She showed Lily her collection of beautiful things she'd found: smooth stones, colorful feathers, and shells that caught the sunlight.

On the cable car ride back, Lily held her shell and thought about how she'd judged Zara without knowing her. Sometimes the scariest-looking things have the most beautiful hearts inside.

Mochi purred in agreement, and Lily knew this was just the first of many magical adventures to come.
