The Cable Car Revelation

cablecatiphone

Maya clutched the fraying **cable** of her headphones like a lifeline, the only thing keeping her grounded in the chaos of the cable car ride home from school. Her **iPhone** buzzed in her pocket—probably another text from Kai asking why she'd ghosted him at lunch.

"He's just trying to be nice," her best friend Riley had said earlier. "You're overthinking it."

But Maya couldn't explain how her stomach twisted every time Kai looked at her with those soft brown eyes, how she felt like an imposter in her own life. The old Maya would've replied instantly with some flirty emoji. New Maya—post-brain-fog, post-everything-changing Maya—couldn't remember how to be that person.

The cable car lurched, and Maya's phone slipped from her grip. She watched in horror as it slid toward the open window.

"NO!" she lunged, but a blur of ginger fur intercepted it.

A stray **cat**—one of the neighborhood ferals that roamed the cable car station—batted at the phone with fascination, sending it skittering across the floor. Maya scrambled after it, her face burning as everyone stared.

"Great," she muttered, scooping up her phone. The screen was cracked. Perfect.

But the cat sat there, tail twitching, eyes narrowed with what looked suspiciously like judgment.

"You too?" Maya whispered. "You think I'm a mess?"

The cat dipped its head once, almost like a nod.

Maya's phone buzzed again. Another text from Kai: "Movie night still on? Your pick this time 😊"

She stared at the message, her thumb hovering. The cat watched, waiting. And suddenly Maya realized—she wasn't broken. She was just... rebooting. Like her phone after a system update. Everything would still be there, just organized differently.

She typed back: "Horror movie? I'll bring snacks."

The cat purred, approval radiating through its tiny body. Maya smiled, finally. She'd figure out the rest tomorrow. Right now, she had a movie night to plan.
