The Cable Car Ghost
Lily loved swimming in the crystal-clear lake behind her house. Every summer afternoon, she'd dive into the cool blue water, pretending she was a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom.
One day, while swimming near the old wooden dock, Lily noticed something peculiar. A thick black cable stretched across the water, disappearing into the mysterious fog that always hovered around the abandoned island at the lake's center. She had never noticed it before.
"That's strange," she whispered, swimming closer.
Suddenly, the cable began to hum and vibrate. An old cable car, covered in vines and moss, emerged from the fog! But what shocked Lily most was what was inside.
A small, green figure sat in the cable car. Its skin looked like pickles, its eyes were tiny circles, and it moved slowly, like it was still half-asleep. It looked exactly like the zombie from her storybooks!
Lily wanted to swim away as fast as she could, but something made her stay. The zombie looked sad, not scary. Its head drooped, and it let out a little sigh that sounded like wind through hollow trees.
"Hello?" Lily called out, treading water.
The zombie jumped. "Oh! A human! I mean, hello there."
"You... you can talk?"
"Of course! I'm Ziggy. I'm not really a zombie—I'm just a very tired magical creature who hasn't had his nap in three hundred years. That's why I look so grumpy and green."
Lily laughed. "Why haven't you napped?"
"I've been stuck in this cable car!" Ziggy explained. "It's broken, and I need to get to the other side to my cozy bed in the cave. But I don't know how to fix it."
Lily swam to shore and found her toolbox. Within minutes, she had fixed the cable car's motor. Ziggy rode across the lake, waving happily.
"Thank you, Lily!" Ziggy called. "You didn't run away even though I looked scary. That's the bravest thing I've ever seen!"
That night, Lily learned something important: sometimes things that seem frightening at first glance might just need a little help and understanding. And from that day on, whenever she went swimming, Ziggy would send magical sparkling waves across the water to say hello.
