The Cable Between Us
The WiFi died at 3:47 PM on a Tuesday, right as I was about to rank up in Overwatch.
"Not again," I groaned, staring at the Loading screen that had frozen my life. Our apartment complex had internet held together by hope and one ancient coaxial cable that nobody wanted to replace because nobody wanted to pay for it.
That's when I heard it — the distinctive *pok-pok-pok* of a ball hitting a racket, echoing from the courtyard below. I leaned out my window and saw her: Chloe, the new girl from 4B, playing padel against the wall by herself. She moved like she'd been doing this forever, her ponytail swinging with every serve.
"You gonna just stare or you gonna help me hold this thing up?" she called, spotting me. The padel court net was sagging on one side.
I hesitated. I was the indoor kid, the gamer, the one who didn't do sports. But something about her confidence made me grab my shoes and head down.
"I've never played," I admitted, handing her the bungee cord she'd asked for.
"Everyone plays, bro. It's like tennis but cooler." She tossed me a racket. "Your forehand's probably trash, but we can fix that."
She was right — my forehand was absolute garbage. But she taught me anyway, laughing when I hit the ball into the bushes, fist-bumping me when I finally managed a decent volley. We played until the streetlights flickered on, until my hands were raw and my shirt clung to my back.
"You're not bad," she said, as we sat on the curb catching our breath. "Better than my last partner. He quit because he said it was messing up his gamer hands."
I laughed. "I literally put a pause on a ranked match to come down here."
"No way. What's your main?"
And just like that, it clicked. She wasn't the popular sporty girl and I wasn't the awkward gamer — we were just two people who liked competition and terrible jokes.
The next weekend, when the building manager finally came to replace the cable connection, I was outside playing padel with Chloe and three other kids from the complex. She waved from the court as the maintenance guy tapped on my window.
"Hey gaming nerd!" she shouted. "You coming back or what?"
"Yeah," I told him. "Just let me grab my racket."
The internet could wait. I had a crew now, and apparently, we had a padel tournament to win.
