The Cable Between Us

The padel court echoed with the rhythmic thwack of racquet against ball, but Elena couldn't focus. Her palms were sweating, grip slippery on the handle. Across the net, Marcus played with aggressive precision, each smash feeling like an accusation.

"You're running away from this," he'd said that morning, as she packed her suitcase. The words still stung.

Three years of relationship, reduced to this metaphorical game. She missed the shot. The ball sailed past her, bouncing against the glass wall.

"Your head's not in it," Marcus called, wiping his forehead with the brim of his hat. That hat—she'd bought it for him in Barcelona, back when they still made each other laugh.

"The cable's out at the apartment," she said instead of answering. "Internet's dead. Can't finish the presentation."

Marcus paused mid-serve. "You're leaving because of WiFi?"

"I'm leaving because you don't see me anymore." The truth slipped out, surprising them both. "I'm just... the person who exists beside you. Like background furniture."

He lowered his racquet. The ball dropped from his hand, rolling slowly across the court. Somewhere beyond the glass walls of the club, the city hummed with indifferent traffic.

"I thought we were happy," Marcus said quietly.

"We were comfortable. There's a difference." Elena opened her hand, staring at her palm where she'd pressed her fingernails into the skin during the match. "I want to be seen. Even the ugly parts."

Marcus walked to the net. "Stay. Tonight. Let's—" He gestured vaguely. "Let's not just run through the motions."

Elena looked at her suitcase waiting in the car, then at the man who'd become a stranger in familiar clothing. "Padel tomorrow?"

"Pick you up at seven."

She nodded. Small steps. The cable between them hadn't snapped—just needed reconnection.
