The Cable Between Us

Elena adjusted her fedora, the brim casting shadows across eyes that had seen too many quarterly reports and not enough sunrise. The hat had been her father's—worn leather, smelled of tobacco and failed dreams. She wore it only on days when the corporate pyramid felt particularly crushing.

"You're still coming to padel tonight?" Marcus asked, not looking up from his spreadsheets. His ethernet cable snaked across the floor like a dead snake, connecting him to a world of numbers that Elena had long ago stopped caring about.

"Wouldn't miss it," she said, though she would rather be anywhere else.

At the court, something shifted. Marcus moved differently here—less the ambitious vice president climbing the pyramid, more the boy he must have been once. His serve was terrible. Elena laughed, genuinely, for the first time in months.

"You know," he said afterward, sweat dripping down his temple as they sat on the bench, "I built this entire company on a lie."

The confession hung between them like the frayed cable she'd noticed dangling from his home office ceiling—dangerous, neglected, potentially catastrophic.

"Which lie?" she asked, though she already knew.

"That any of it matters." He looked at her then, really looked. "The pyramid scheme, Elena. It's all just—"

"People trying not to feel alone?"

He nodded. A cable car passed in the distance, tiny lights moving across the dark sky like fallen stars.

"Take off the hat," he said.

She hesitated. The fedora was armor. But she removed it, and the wind touched her hair, and Marcus reached out—

His phone buzzed. Another crisis. Another emergency. The pyramid demanded its sacrifice.

He didn't check it. Instead, he said, "I quit."

Elena laughed again, and this time, she didn't stop until they were both crying, two tiny figures on a padel court at midnight, finally free.
