The Cable Between Us

Maya pressed her forehead against the cold window, 3:47 AM glowing neon on her phone. She was in full zombie mode—eyes grainy, brain foggy, yet somehow still scrolling through Finn's Instagram for the four hundredth time since he'd commented "haha" on her post three days ago.

"You're literally spy-status obsessed," her best friend Jayla had texted earlier. "Just DM him."

Easy for Jayla to say. She wasn't the one who'd spent seventh grade sitting behind Finn in math, memorizing the back of his head like it would be on the final.

Maya's room flickered. The ancient cable connection her dad refused to upgrade because "we're cutting the cord any day now" had been glitching all week. But tonight, the static cleared enough to reveal something impossible: Finn's face on some random public access channel at 4 AM.

She squinted. He was... hosting a zombie movie marathon?

"Welcome back to FINN'S FRIGHTFUL FIESTA," the TV-Finn announced, wearing a cape that was definitely a bedsheet with a safety pin. "Tonight's feature: Zombies from Sector 7. But first—" he lowered his voice dramatically, "—a word from our sponsors. Me. I'm the sponsor."

Maya actually laughed out loud. This goofy, passionate dork was the same Finn who sat quietly in AP English, the one she'd built up in her head as some mysterious cool guy?

Her phone buzzed. Finn had posted a new story: the cable channel number. "if u can't sleep, join the zombie club lol"

Heart hammering, Maya typed: "i've been watching. sector 7 is a masterpiece obvi"

His reply came instantly: "OMG I'VE SPOTTED A FELLOW ZOMBIE CONNOISSEUR"

Maya grinned, feeling suddenly very awake. Sometimes the best things happened when you were running on fumes, spying on cable TV at 4 AM, discovering that the person you thought was too cool to notice you was actually just another weirdo with a bedsheet cape and a dream.
