The Cable Beneath the Water

Elena should have been enjoying the Sunday padel match with Julian, but her thoughts kept drifting to the severed cable she'd found on her apartment floor that morning. The fiber-optic line from her router, cut clean through.

"You're missing everything," Julian called from across the court, wiping sweat from his forehead. The sun glinted off the glass wall behind him. "Same time next week?"

"Actually," she said, lowering her racket, "I need to head home."

At her building, the maintenance guy was replacing the cable in the wall box. "Old wiring," he said, though the original had been installed only six months ago.

That night, Elena went swimming at the university pool where she'd met Marcus five years ago. The water had always been where she could think, but tonight even the rhythm of her strokes couldn't quiet the rising panic. Marcus had been working late again. His phone had been password-protected for months now. And now this—a disabled internet line, easily explained away.

She surfaced to find herself alone in the pool. The overhead lights reflected off the water's surface like shattered glass.

Back home, Marcus was already asleep, his breathing even. Elena lay beside him in the dark, hand curled around her phone. She knew she shouldn't. She knew the truth would break her.

She'd been a spy once herself—corporate espionage, nothing glamorous, just paying attention to things people thought were hidden. She knew the signs. The changed passwords. The muffled phone calls on the balcony. The way he monitored his own devices.

She reached for his phone on the nightstand, careful not to disturb him. His thumb was his password—she'd watched him enter it a hundred times.

The messages weren't what she expected. Not another woman. Not betrayal of that kind.

Instead, she found a report: surveillance logs, photographs of her entering the university, screenshots of her work emails, notes on her swimming schedule. Then a message from an unknown number: "Subject remains unaware. Continue observation."

Marcus wasn't having an affair. Marcus was her handler.

Elena placed the phone back exactly as she'd found it. She lay in the darkness, listening to the breathing of the man she'd loved for five years, and understood that the cable beneath her apartment wall hadn't been old wiring at all. It had been her lifeline to a truth she'd always been too afraid to see—that the life she thought she'd chosen had never really been hers to begin with.
