The Cable Beneath

The frayed cable behind the television had been bothering Elena for weeks. Each time she'd notice it dangling there, she'd promise herself to call someone, but days blurred into the same numb routine.

Her husband Marcus had loved baseball—Red Sox cap permanently backward, shouting at the television during playoffs. Now the games played to empty rooms. Three months since his accident, and the house felt like a museum curated by someone who'd stopped caring.

She found it tucked inside his baseball memorabilia collection: a pyramid-shaped USB drive hidden in a signed ball. When she plugged it in, folders cascaded across her screen—financial records, emails, wire transfers. Her husband hadn't been an accountant. He'd been a spy, embedded in the corporation downtown to uncover their pyramid scheme.

The last file was dated the night of his accident. It contained evidence of the theft, the specific names, the payoff coordinates. And a draft email: addressed to her, unsent. "If you're reading this, they found me. Bear this truth: they'll come for you next."

The doorbell chimed.

Elena's fingers hovered over the delete key. Outside, two men in suits stood near a parked car with blacked-out windows. She'd seen them before, she realized—after the funeral, sitting in cars down the street. They'd always seemed like mourners.

She closed the file, ejected the drive, and slid it deep into her pocket. Then she walked to the door and opened it, feeling the weight of everything she now bore settle across her shoulders like a second skin.

"Mrs. Chen?" the older man asked. "We were hoping you might reconsider our earlier conversation."

She smiled, realizing Marcus's accident hadn't been an accident at all. "About my husband's files?" She met his gaze squarely. "I've been expecting you."
