The Cable Beneath

Elena ran her fingers through her hair—now streaked with silver at thirty-eight—and wondered if the gray had come from the job or the marriage. Probably both. The coaxial cable snaked across the floorboards like a dead thing, connecting her to a world she'd spent twenty years spying on.

Corporate espionage had seemed glamorous at twenty-two. She'd imagined herself in trench coats and European hotels, not parked in a Honda Civic outside a data center in New Jersey, eating takeout Thai while downloading proprietary algorithms. Her wife, Mara, had stopped asking about the late nights years ago. Some secrets required their own kind of intimacy.

The fox appeared at dusk—a scrawny urban thing with mangy fur and one bad ear—pawing through the dumpster behind the offices of Nexus Innovations. Elena watched it through binoculars, thinking how alike they were. Scavengers picking through the leftovers of companies that had already cannibalized each other.

Her handler's voice crackled through her earpiece: "Package secure. Come home."

She should have felt relief. Instead, she felt the particular hollow that came after every successful extraction. The money would land in her offshore account by morning. She'd buy Mara something nice. They'd pretend for a few weeks that everything was fine.

The fox looked up at her, eyes reflecting the security light, and something cracked open inside her. She packed her equipment, coiled the cable with practiced hands, and drove away from the life she'd built on other people's secrets.

Somewhere between the turnpike and the driveway, she pulled over and dialed a number she'd never called before.

"I want to make a deal."
