The Cable at the Bottom of the Pool

The corporate pyramid had been her life for seventeen years—each promotion a new tier, each tier a little more oxygen-starved than the last. Elena had learned to breathe the thin air at the top, but lately, she'd been running out of breath.

She laced her running shoes at 4 AM, the only time the Chicago streets felt truly hers. Her feet hit the pavement in rhythm with the questions she'd been avoiding: When had ambition become a cage? When had the view from the corner office started looking like a view from a prison cell?

The hotel pool in Las Vegas was empty at this hour. She'd come for the industry conference—another room full of people climbing their own pyramids, shaking hands, exchanging cards, pretending not to see the desperation in each other's eyes.

She slipped into the water, and that's when she saw it: a thick black cable snaking across the pool bottom, some remnant of an underwater light show or forgotten filtration system. It lay there like a dark secret, and suddenly Elena was thirty again, standing in her apartment the day her mother called to say she was leaving Elena's father.

"You reach a point where you realize you've been someone's accessory for too long," her mother had said. "And the strangest thing? You don't hate them. You just don't recognize yourself anymore."

The cable in the pool deep. The way it coiled around itself, trapped by its own weight.

Elena had been running toward success for so long she'd forgotten what she was running from. The pool's surface rippled in the pre-dawn light. Her phone buzzed on the chair—her husband, probably. Or maybe it was the office. Or the pyramid above her, requiring another offering.

She let it ring.

The cable would stay at the bottom of the pool, and someone else would deal with it later. Elena had her own cables to cut, her own running to do—not toward something, but away from everything she'd carefully built and no longer wanted.

She climbed out of the water, dripping and transformed. The pyramid would still be there tomorrow. Today, she had a different appointment with destiny.
