The Bullseye Blunder

Marcus adjusted his lucky hat, tugging the brim low. Being fourteen felt like walking through a minefield of awkward moments, and today was no exception. He was basically playing spy, hiding behind the bleachers at the community baseball game, watching Maya laugh with her friends on the pitcher's mound.

His golden retriever, Buster, nudged his hand, demanding attention. "Not now, dude," Marcus whispered, though Buster was the only one who didn't judge him for being hopeless.

Then he saw him: Tyler. The bull of eighth grade, currently making his way toward Maya with that swagger that made everyone else invisible. Marcus's stomach did that familiar flip.

Tyler's gang of followers circled Maya like sharks. Marcus knew he should walk away—knew he wasn't ready for whatever social disaster awaited. But then Buster bolted.

The dog sprinted toward the field, tennis ball clamped in his jaw, straight toward Tyler's expensive cleats. Tyler stumbled backward, arms windmilling, and landed flat on his back in the dirt. The bleachers erupted.

Maya laughed. Not mean-laughed, but actually laughed—head thrown back, radiant, real. She looked around, spotted Marcus sprinting after his traitor dog, and their eyes met.

"Is this your dog?" she called, still grinning.

Marcus's face burned. "Yeah. Sorry. He's... really into baseball?"

"Clearly better at it than Tyler," Maya said, and something in her expression made Marcus think maybe—just maybe—his luck was finally changing.

Buster sat beside Tyler, wagging his tail like he'd just won the championship. Marcus adjusted his hat, feeling inexplicably brave. "Wanna hang out after the game?"

Maya's smile widened. "Depends. Can your dog teach me how to pitch like that?"

As Tyler scrambled up, dusting off his ego and his jersey, Marcus realized something: growing up wasn't about being cool. It was about having a dog who embarrassed you into your first real conversation with the girl you'd been spying on for months.

Best baseball game ever.
