The Bullpen Operation

Marcus adjusted his cap, heart hammering like a drum solo. His first real baseball practice, and he was about to pull the most middle school move ever: spying on the varsity team's secret signs from behind the equipment shed.

Coach Reynolds had warned them about scouts this week. Marcus figured if he could crack the varsity's coded signals before tryouts, he'd look like a total prodigy. Hence, Operation Bullpen.

"Psst. You look super sketch right now."

Marcus nearly jumped out of his cleats. Chloe, the sophomore catcher, leaned against the shed, eating an apple.

"I'm not sketchy," he lied. "Just... appreciating the architecture."

Chloe snorted. "That's bull, Marcus. You've been staring at the third base coach for twenty minutes."

Busted. But then she lowered her voice. "They're switching signs. Heard Reynolds talking about it in gym."

Marcus's eyes widened. "For real?"

"Duh. They know people watch." She tossed her apple core. "Wanna actually learn something useful?"

Behind the shed, Old MacDonald's prize bull from the adjacent farm huffed at them through the fence. Chloe ignored it, scribbling on her hand.

"Watch the catcher's mitt instead. When he sets up outside, fastball. Inside, curve. That's basic stuff but it'll get you through tryouts."

Marcus stared. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because you've got a nice arm," she said, already walking away. "Also, watching you fail at spying was painful."

At tryouts, Marcus nailed every pitch recognition drill. Coach Reynolds raised an eyebrow. "Not bad for a rookie."

As he packed his bag, Chloe appeared, grinning. "Told you."

"Thanks," Marcus said. "For the help. And not reporting me for being a creep."

"You're still a creep," she called over her shoulder. "But you're a creep who made the team."

Marcus smiled. Sometimes, the best operations weren't the ones you planned. They were the ones where you got caught, humiliated, and helped anyway.
