The Bull Who Swam in Moonlight
Lily loved running through the meadow behind her house, her bare feet dancing over cool grass. Every evening at sunset, she'd race the wind, pretending she could fly.
One Tuesday, something magical happened. Lily was running farther than usual when she discovered a hidden pool she'd never seen before. The water sparkled like diamonds, even though the sun had nearly set.
But the most amazing surprise was what she saw swimming in that pool.
It was a bull! Not a scary, angry bull like in storybooks, but a gentle giant with fur the color of autumn leaves and eyes that shone like warm honey. He was doing backstrokes, his big hoofs paddling gracefully through the water.
Lily gasped. The bull noticed her and smiled.
"Hello there, little runner," he said, his voice deep and rumbly like distant thunder. "I'm Ferdinand. Would you like to join me?"
Lily stepped closer. "You can talk? And... you're swimming?"
"Magic pools are full of surprises," Ferdinand winked. "This pool only appears to children with kind hearts. And I'm not just any bull — I'm the Moonlight Guardian."
That summer, Lily visited Ferdinand every evening. They became the best of friends. He taught her that even the biggest, strongest creatures can be gentle and kind. She taught him that running with joy is better than running to escape.
"Most people see bulls and think we're fierce," Ferdinand said one night. "But really, we just want friends who understand us."
On the last day of summer, the pool began to fade. Ferdinand's magical time was ending.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked, her heart squeezing tight.
"Whenever you run through this meadow," Ferdinand promised, "I'll be running beside you in spirit. And if you ever feel lonely, just look at the moon. That's where I'll be watching over you."
Lily ran home that night, faster than ever before, but she wasn't racing the wind anymore. She was running with gratitude for the summer she'd never forget.
Now, whenever she sees the moonlight reflecting in puddles after a rainstorm, she smiles. Sometimes, just sometimes, she thinks she sees a pair of gentle, honey-colored eyes winking back.
And that, she knows, is her friend reminding her that magic is real for those who believe.
