The Bull Who Played Ball
Sam loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and worn leather ball, heading to the old field behind his house. But one sunny afternoon, his best hit sailed over the fence, disappearing into Farmer McGregor's forbidden pasture.
Sam knew he shouldn't go there. The stories about the fierce bull who guarded that pasture were legendary. But his favorite baseball was out there, and he had to get it back.
Climbing carefully over the wooden fence, Sam landed softly in the tall grass. That's when he heard it—*thwack, thwack, thwack.* Curious, he crept forward, becoming an accidental spy as he peeked around an old oak tree.
What he saw made his jaw drop. There was Barnaby, the enormous black bull everyone feared, batting a rock back and forth with his massive horns. Each perfect hit sent the rock flying exactly where he wanted it to go. The bull was playing baseball all by himself!
Sam's gasp gave him away. Barnaby froze, looking embarrassed. But instead of charging, the bull gently nudged Sam's lost baseball toward him with his nose.
"I've been waiting for someone to play with," the bull said softly, much to Sam's amazement.
That afternoon, Sam learned that appearances can be deceiving. The scary bull was actually the most patient baseball coach he'd ever met. Barnaby taught Sam how to hit better, and Sam taught the bull about teamwork and friendship.
Every day after that, Sam returned to play catch with his unlikely friend. The other kids never believed him, but Sam didn't mind. Some magical secrets are meant to be kept between friends.
Sam learned that true friendship can be found in the most unexpected places—even in a pasture behind a forbidden fence, with a bull who loved baseball as much as he did.
