The Bull Who Pitched Stars

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her worn-out glove and run to the dusty field behind her house. But there was one problem—she had no one to play with.

One golden evening, as the sun painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, Lily heard something strange. A deep, rumbling sound echoed from the old Miller farm next door. Curious, she crept through the tall grass and peeked through the wooden fence.

There, standing alone in the pasture, was the biggest bull she had ever seen. His coat was as black as midnight, with horns that curved like crescent moons. But he wasn't grazing or sleeping. He was moving his massive front leg back and forth, back and forth, as if...

Lily gasped. "Are you... pitching?"

The bull stopped and looked at her with soft, sad eyes. He nodded slowly.

Lily's heart raced with excitement. She climbed over the fence and walked toward him cautiously. "I'm Lily. What's your name?"

The bull pawed at the dirt, spelling out B-A-R-N-E-Y.

"Nice to meet you, Barney," Lily said, smiling. "I love baseball too. Want to play catch?"

Barney's eyes lit up like stars. He nodded eagerly.

Lily tossed the ball. Barney caught it gently in his enormous mouth and tossed it back with surprising precision. They played until fireflies began to dance in the twilight.

"You're amazing, Barney!" Lily exclaimed. "Why didn't you ever play with anyone before?"

Barney looked down at his massive hooves and sighed. A single tear rolled down his snout. He spelled out in the dirt: S-C-A-R-Y.

Lily wrapped her arms around his giant leg. "You're not scary, Barney. You're the best friend I've ever had. And you know what?"

She looked up at the first star appearing in the sky. "Sometimes the most wonderful things come in surprising packages. My grandma told me that true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes."

From that day on, Lily and Barney became the most unlikely baseball buddies in the world. And whenever other children asked about her unusual friend, Lily would just smile and say, "The best friends are the ones you never expected to find."

And she was right.
