The Bull Who Made Magic Grow
Lily didn't want to spend her summer at Grandma's farm. No wifi, no TV, and she had dropped her iphone in the mud on the first day.
"Go explore the garden," Grandma said. "There's magic there if you look."
Lily sighed. The only thing in the garden was spinach, which she hated. But as she wandered past the tall vegetables, she heard something heavy snoring.
Behind a giant pumpkin sat the biggest bull Lily had ever seen. His coat was the color of storm clouds, with patches of golden sunlight. He wasn't sleeping—he was watching a tiny butterfly land on his nose.
"Hello," Lily whispered.
The bull blinked. His eyes were kind and gentle, like her grandfather's. He nodded slowly.
"I'm Ferdinand," said a voice in Lily's head, though the bull's lips didn't move. "And you're Lily."
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Only to those who believe in magic." Ferdinand lowered his massive head. "Would you like to see something wonderful?"
He nosed toward a patch of spinach. "Try one leaf. Just one."
Lily wrinkled her nose. Everyone knew spinach was terrible.
"Trust me," Ferdinand said softly.
Lily pinched a small leaf and popped it in her mouth. Her eyes widened. It tasted like sunshine and rainbows and birthday cake all mixed together!
Suddenly, the garden began to glow. The spinach leaves shimmered like emeralds. Flowers bloomed in seconds. Butterflies the size of dinner plates fluttered around them.
Ferdinand chuckled. "The spinach grows magic when shared with a friend. Your grandmother planted it years ago. I've been waiting for someone who needed wonder."
Lily spent every day with Ferdinand that summer. She learned that the iphone she missed was nothing compared to real magic—the magic of friendship, of trying new things, of seeing the world with curious eyes.
On her last day, Lily hugged Ferdinand's warm neck. "I'll never forget you."
"And I'll never forget the girl who learned that brave little bites lead to big adventures."
As Lily's mom drove away, Lily noticed something in her pocket—a single spinach leaf, glowing softly like a tiny green star. She smiled, already planning her next visit to the garden where magic grew.
