The Bull Who Made Friends
Leo loved his toy bull, Barnaby. Barnaby had orange horns and the softest brown fur. Every night, Leo whispered stories to Barnaby before bed.
One full moon, something magical happened. Barnaby twitched his nose. He stretched his legs. He blinked his eyes.
"Leo?" Barnaby said. "Are you really real?"
Leo gasped. "Barnaby! You're alive!"
"I've always been alive in here," Barnaby tapped his chest. "But tonight, the moon magic is strong. Let's have an adventure!"
They tiptoed outside into the garden. Fireflies danced around them like tiny orange stars. Suddenly, they heard a sad sound from behind the old oak tree.
"Mooooo..." but it was a strange, sleepy moan.
Leo hid behind Barnaby. "What's that?"
A creature stepped out. It looked like a bull, but its fur was patchy and one horn drooped. It shuffled slowly.
"A zombie bull!" Leo whispered.
Barnaby stepped forward bravely. "Hello? What's wrong?"
"I'm Zed," the creature said sadly. "I'm not a zombie. I'm just very lonely. I haven't had a friend in so long that I've forgotten how to be happy. My fur grew patchy from sadness. My horn drooped from never holding my head up high."
Leo's heart hurt. He stepped out from behind Barnaby.
"Zed, would you like an orange?" Leo pulled a bright orange from his pocket. "My grandpa says oranges are friendship fruit. When you share them, new friends appear."
Zed's eyes widened. "Really?"
Leo peeled the orange and divided it into three pieces. The scent filled the air—sweet and sunny.
They ate together under the moon. Zed's fur seemed to get shinier. His droopy horn perked up just a little.
"I feel... happy," Zed said, surprised.
"That's the magic of friendship," Barnaby said. "It works better than moon magic."
They played tag until the stars began to fade. When the sun peeked over the hills, Zed looked completely different—shiny fur, straight horns, bright eyes.
"Thank you," Zed said. "Will you be my friends forever?"
"Forever," Leo promised.
Back in Leo's room, Barnaby became a toy again. But he winked at Leo before he froze.
Leo knew this wasn't a dream. Some nights, when the moon was full, Zed would visit. They'd share oranges and laugh until dawn.
And Leo learned that things that seem scary might just be lonely. Sometimes, friendship is the strongest magic of all.
