The Bull Who Loved to Swim
Emma loved running through the meadow behind her house. Every sunny afternoon, she would race past the old oak tree, her feet pattering against the grass like raindrops on a tin roof. But one day, something made her stop.
Behind the bushes, she found the most surprising thing—a great black bull, standing quietly by the edge of the secret pool that nobody knew about. The water sparkled like diamonds in the afternoon sun.
Emma held her breath. Bulls were supposed to be scary, weren't they? But this one just looked at her with big, gentle brown eyes and let out a soft snort that sounded almost like a laugh.
"You're not going to chase me, are you?" Emma whispered.
The bull shook his massive head slowly. Then, to Emma's amazement, he stepped into the pool with a graceful SPLASH!
Emma gasped. The bull was swimming! He moved through the water as smoothly as a fish, his great body floating weightless. He looked so happy, his eyes bright with joy.
"You love swimming too!" Emma cried, forgetting to be afraid. She ran to the edge and dipped her toes in the cool water.
The bull swam over and nudged her hand with his wet nose. His name, Emma decided, was Barnaby.
Every day that summer, Emma would go running to the secret pool, and Barnaby would be waiting. They would spend hours swimming together—the girl and the bull, the most unlikely friends in the world.
Emma learned something wonderful that summer: the most unexpected friendships can bring the greatest happiness. And sometimes, the things we think are scary are just lonely, waiting for someone to see who they really are.
