The Bull Who Loved Riddles
Barnaby was not like other bulls. While the others in Farmer McGregor's field spent their days chewing grass and swatting flies with their tails, Barnaby spent his time gazing at the stars and wondering about the world beyond the fence. He felt lonely, because no one wanted to talk about magic or mystery or the secrets of the universe.
One moonlit night, Barnaby heard a soft voice whispering from the old stone garden behind the farmhouse. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"
Barnaby's heart skipped a beat. He knew that riddle! It was the famous riddle of the Sphinx! Carefully, quietly, he pushed through the loose fence board and crept toward the garden.
There, perched atop a crumbling stone fountain, sat the most beautiful creature Barnaby had ever seen. She had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the face of a wise woman. Her eyes sparkled like golden stars.
"A person," Barnaby whispered. "A baby crawls on four legs, a grown-up walks on two, and an elder uses a cane for the third leg."
The sphinx's eyes widened with delight. "Correct! And how wonderful to meet someone who knows the joy of riddles!" She introduced herself as Celeste, and told Barnaby she had been watching him from the garden for many nights. She knew he was different, special, magical.
"But I'm just a bull," Barnaby said sadly.
"Just a bull?" Celeste laughed softly. "Barnaby, you are the only creature in all the land who has ever answered my riddle correctly without hesitation. That makes you extraordinary."
Every night after that, Barnaby would sneak to the garden to solve riddles with Celeste. They became the best of friends, talking about everything from constellations to ancient legends to the dreams hidden inside every heart. Celeste taught Barnaby that his differences were his greatest strength, and Barnaby taught Celeste about the simple beauty of the world she had watched from afar.
One evening, Celeste shared a secret. "You know, Barnaby, friendship is the rarest magic of all. It transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary adventures, and ordinary creatures into extraordinary friends."
Barnaby realized she was right. He had found not just a friend, but someone who saw the magic inside him that no one else had noticed. And in that moment, under the starlight with his sphinx friend, Barnaby felt like the most magical bull in all the world.
