The Bull Who Loved Riddles
Leo lived on a small farm with his grandparents. Every morning, he helped feed the animals, but his favorite was Barnaby—a massive brown bull with surprisingly gentle eyes and a secret talent. Barnaby could talk!
"Morning, Leo!" Barnaby would moo softly. "Any exciting adventures today?"
One Tuesday, while Leo was picking fresh spinach from the garden for dinner, a mysterious wind swirled around the farm. Suddenly, a golden sphinx materialized near the old oak tree. She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman, her eyes twinkling like stars.
"Young traveler," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "I have traveled far seeking someone pure of heart. Answer my riddle correctly, and you shall receive a gift."
Leo stepped forward, still holding his basket of spinach. Barnaby trotted beside him, protective and brave.
The sphinx smiled. "Here is my riddle: I am green and leafy, small but mighty. I make your muscles strong, but something else makes you stronger. What am I?"
Leo thought carefully. "Spinach!"
"Correct," the sphinx nodded. "But tell me, young one—what is stronger than spinach?"
Leo looked at Barnaby, then at his grandparents waving from the porch. "Kindness," he said. "And friendship. Barnaby protects me because he's my friend, not because he ate spinach!"
The sphinx's eyes sparkled. "You are wise beyond your years." She pressed a small crystal into Leo's palm. "This will remind you that true strength comes from the heart, not just from food."
From that day on, whenever Leo ate his spinach, he remembered that being strong meant being kind too. And Barnaby? He became famous in the village—not just for being a talking bull, but for being the kindest friend anyone could ever have.
Sometimes, the strongest magic isn't what you eat. It's who you love, and who loves you back.
