The Bull Who Loved Padel
Lily discovered the secret garden behind her grandmother's house on a hot summer afternoon. She pushed through the tangled vines and gasped. In the middle of a grassy clearing stood a bull—not a scary bull, but a gentle one with kind brown eyes and a spotted coat. His name was Barnaby.
"Hello there!" Barnaby said, his voice deep and rumbly like thunder. "Would you like to play padel?"
Lily's eyes widened. "Bulls don't play sports!"
"This one does!" Barnaby winked. He pulled a padel racket from behind his ear—where had it been hiding?—and tossed her a bright blue one. "My grandfather taught me. He was a champion."
They played for hours, batting the ball back and forth. Barnaby was surprisingly graceful, dancing around the court on tiptoes. Whenever Lily missed a shot, he cheered louder. "Wonderful try! Your backhand is improving!"
Nearby, in a small pond, a tiny goldfish named Fin watched them. Fin could leap surprisingly high out of the water, and whenever Barnaby scored a point, Fin did a celebratory flip.
"I wish I had something special to give you," Lily said when they paused for a break. The summer sun had made them both hungry.
Barnaby smiled mysteriously. "Follow me."
He led her to a magical papaya tree at the garden's edge. Its trunk twisted like a candy cane, and the fruits glowed with a soft golden light.
"These aren't ordinary papayas," Barnaby whispered. "One bite, and your dreams become clearer. Two bites, and you find courage. Three bites... well, that's a secret."
Lily took one bite. Suddenly, she understood—this wasn't just a game. Barnaby had been lonely before she arrived. The padel court had been silent. Fin had no one to cheer for.
"Thank you for playing with me," Barnaby said softly. "Everyone sees a bull and runs away. But you stayed."
Lily took another bite. She knew exactly what to say.
"I'll come back every day," she promised. "And we'll teach Fin to play too."
The goldfish splashed excitedly. Barnaby's eyes shone like stars. And somewhere in the magic of that secret garden, a papaya ripened to perfection, knowing that the best dreams are the ones you share with friends.
