The Bull Who Loved Goldfish
In a green meadow next to a sparkling pond, there lived a bull named Barnaby. Barnaby was big and strong, but he was very gentle. He loved to spend his afternoons resting near the pond, watching the tiny fish swim in the clear water.
Barnaby's favorite fish was a small orange goldfish named Glimmer. Glimmer was the smallest fish in the pond, but she was also the bravest. While all the other fish hid when Barnaby came near, Glimmer would swim right up to the surface and wiggle her tail at him.
One hot afternoon, dark clouds gathered in the sky. The birds stopped singing, and the air felt heavy. Barnaby knew a storm was coming. He stood up to head to the barn, but then he noticed something worrying - Glimmer was swimming very close to the surface, and the water was dropping fast!
"Glimmer!" Barnaby called. "The pond is drying up! You need to find deeper water!"
But there was no deeper water. The pond was small, and the summer had been very hot. Glimmer was trapped in just a few inches of water, and the storm was still far away.
Just then, the first flash of lightning streaked across the dark sky. CRACK! Thunder shook the ground. Rain began to fall, big heavy drops that splashed into the shrinking pond.
Barnaby had an idea. Using his big horns, he carefully dug a trench from the pond toward the lower meadow where rainwater would collect. The rain fell harder now, and lightning flashed again and again. Barnaby worked quickly, his strong body moving despite the slippery mud.
"Come, Glimmer!" he urged as the trench filled with water. "Follow the water!"
The little goldfish swam bravely down the newly-made stream. Lightning flashed all around them, illuminating Glimmer's orange scales like tiny lanterns in the dark.
When the storm finally passed, Barnaby and Glimmer found themselves in a beautiful new pond that had formed in the meadow - bigger and deeper than the old one. Other fish from the old pond had followed Glimmer, and now they all had a wonderful new home.
Glimmer swam to the surface and blew bubbles at Barnaby. The bull smiled, his wet coat shining in the returning sunlight.
"Thank you, Barnaby," the little goldfish seemed to say.
Barnaby knew that even though he was big and she was small, they had made the perfect team. Sometimes the best friends come in very different sizes, and true courage comes in many forms - even in a tiny goldfish who wasn't afraid of lightning.
