The Bull Who Loved Baseball
Leo was the smallest boy on his baseball team, and he was afraid of the water. Every summer, his team practiced at the park near the sparkling lake, but Leo never joined when they went swimming afterward.
One hot afternoon, Leo sat alone on the bench, missing the ball again and again. That's when he heard a snort behind him.
A enormous brown bull with kind brown eyes was watching him! But this wasn't an ordinary bull — around his neck hung a necklace made of baseball caps.
"I'm Barnaby," said the bull, and Leo was so surprised he almost fell off the bench. Bulls couldn't talk! But Barnaby just smiled. "I've been watching baseball games here for fifty years. You've got a good swing, but you're holding your breath."
Barnaby nudged Leo's glove with his nose. "Every day, I eat the brightest orange from the magic tree by the lake. It's like a special vitamin for courage. Would you like one?"
Leo's eyes widened. Barnaby led him to a secret grove where an orange tree glowed with golden light. The bull tossed Leo a shining orange.
"Take it," Barnaby said. "Then we'll go swimming."
Leo's heart beat fast. "But bulls can't swim!"
Barnaby laughed. "Barnaby does!" And to Leo's amazement, the bull plunged into the lake, swimming beautifully through the sparkling water.
Leo ate the magical orange, felt warmth spread through his chest, and jumped in after his new friend. They played baseball in the water, tossing a floating ball back and forth while fish cheered from below.
That day, Leo learned that courage comes from friendship, and sometimes the most unlikely friends make the best teammates. He became the bravest player on his team, and every summer, he and Barnaby taught other children to swim and play baseball together.
