The Bull Who Learned to Swim

High above the sleepy town of Willowbrook lived a most unusual cloud named Barnaby. Most clouds floated peacefully, but Barnaby was special—he could shape himself into anything he imagined. His favorite shape was a bull, big and strong with curved horns and a fluffy white tail.

One hot summer afternoon, seven-year-old Lily looked up at the sky and saw Barnaby the cloud-bull. "Look!" she shouted to her friends. "That cloud looks like a bull running!"

Barnaby heard her and felt so proud that he puffed out his chest—and suddenly, he tumbled right out of the sky! He landed with a soft WHOOSH in the town's swimming pond.

Lily and her friends rushed to the pond's edge. There, floating in the water, was a bull made entirely of white fluffy cloud, looking very confused.

"I'm Barnaby," he said in a voice like gentle thunder. "I think I fell."

"You can't swim in that form," said Lily thoughtfully. "But you could try floating instead!"

Barnaby was scared. The water looked deep and mysterious. "What if I sink?"

"We'll help you," promised Lily. She took off her shoes and waded in. Her friends did too, forming a circle around the cloud-bull. "Swimming is just like running," she explained, "but you move your legs instead of your feet, and the water holds you up."

Barnaby tried. At first, he just churned up foam. But Lily guided him, counting, "One, two, three—kick, kick, kick!"

Suddenly, Barnaby was swimming! His cloud-body bobbed on the surface, leaving little ripples like silver sparkles.

"I'm doing it!" Barnaby cheered. "I'm swimming!"

All summer long, Barnaby swam with the children. He learned to dive and race. The other clouds in the sky watched curiously, and soon some joined him—shape-shifting into fish and turtles and ducks.

But when autumn arrived, Barnaby grew heavy with water. "I need to go home," he told Lily sadly. "But I'll never forget you."

"Whenever you see a cloud shaped like a bull running across the sky," Lily said, "that's my friend Barnaby!"

And to this day, if you look up on a sunny day, you might see Barnaby the cloud-bull, still practicing his swimming and remembering the little girl who taught him that trying something new with friends makes anything possible.
