The Bull Who Learned to Float
Barnaby was not like other bulls. While his friends spent their days charging and snorting, Barnaby spent his days watching.
He watched the butterflies dance. He watched the clouds drift. And most of all, he watched the cool, sparkling pond behind the farmer's house.
Barnaby wanted nothing more than to go swimming. But everyone knows bulls can't swim—they're too heavy, too clumsy, too... bull-like.
"You'll sink like a stone," grumbled Old Bessie the cow. "Bulls belong on land, not water."
Barnaby lowered his head and sighed.
One hot summer afternoon, as Barnaby stood at the pond's edge wishing he could dip his hooves in the cool water, something splashed him right between the eyes!
"SPLOSH!"
Barnaby blinked. A tiny golden dog with fur the color of sunshine paddled happily in the water. It was Splash, the farmer's new puppy.
"Hello there!" Splash barked happily. "The water's perfect today! Want to join me?"
"I can't," said Barnaby sadly. "I'm a bull. Bulls sink."
Splash swam closer. "That's not true at all! Everyone can float if they trust the water. Come on—I'll teach you!"
Something about Splash's smile made Barnaby feel brave. Slowly, carefully, he stepped into the pond.
The water felt magical against his legs. Deeper and deeper he went until—OH NO—he couldn't touch the bottom anymore!
Barnaby squeezed his eyes shut and waited to sink...
But he didn't sink. He bobbed. He floated. Gentle waves cradled him like a lullaby.
"You're doing it!" cheered Splash, swimming circles around him. "You're swimming!"
Barnaby opened his eyes. He was swimming! He was really and truly swimming! The bull who couldn't swim was now gliding through the water like a happy hippo.
That afternoon, Barnaby and Splash played for hours. They raced. They splashed. They discovered that the best adventures happen when you're brave enough to try something new.
From that day on, Barnaby became known as the Swimming Bull. And whenever anyone said "bulls can't swim," Barnaby would just smile and dive right in, proving that with a little courage and a good friend, anything is possible.
