The Bull Who Guarded Starlight
Lily discovered the secret on a Tuesday, while visiting her grandmother's farm. Hidden behind the old red barn, a thick silver cable pulsed with soft blue light, stretching up into the sky like a climbing beanstalk.
"What are you doing here?" a deep voice rumbled.
Lily jumped. Behind her stood the biggest bull she'd ever seen, with eyes like warm chocolate and horns that curved like crescent moons. But he wasn't scary. He looked... curious.
"I'm Lily," she whispered. "What's your name?"
"Barnaby," the bull said, dipping his massive head. "And you've found the star-cable. It carries wishes from Earth to the stars."
Lily gasped. "Really?"
"Really." Barnaby's eyes twinkled. "I guard it. But tonight's the Star Festival, and the cable is tangled. Hundreds of wishes won't reach the stars unless we fix it together."
He nudged her with his velvety nose. "Will you help me, friend?"
Lily's heart swelled. A real bull, calling her friend! And magic wishes!
Together they worked – Barnaby's gentle hooves held the cable steady while Lily's small fingers carefully untangled each knot. With every knot freed, a wish zoomed up the silver thread in sparkle-bursts of purple and gold.
"Thank you," Barnaby said when the last wish soared upward. "Being guardian of the star-cable is lonely work. Not anymore."
Lily hugged Barnaby's warm neck. "I'll visit every summer. We can be friends forever."
That night, Lily made her own wish on the brightest star – that everyone could find a friend as wonderful as a bull named Barnaby.
And somewhere far above, her wish joined hundreds of others, traveling up the silver cable, wrapped in starlight.
