The Bull Who Fell from Stars
Eight-year-old Maya loved spending afternoons by the old pool behind her grandmother's house. The water had turned emerald-green from neglect, but Maya didn't mind. She imagined it was a portal to another world.
One sweltering afternoon, as Maya sat beneath the towering palm tree, she heard a strange splash. Peering through the palm fronds, she gasped.
A magnificent creature struggled in the murky water—a bull with golden horns and a coat that shimmered like sunrise. But this was no ordinary bull. His eyes held the wisdom of ancient stories, and flowers bloomed wherever his hooves touched the earth.
'Maya,' the bull spoke, his voice like distant thunder. 'I am Apollo, guardian of the celestial herd. I fell while chasing a comet.'
Maya's fear melted into wonder. 'Are you hurt?' She waded into the pool, the water suddenly crystal clear around her.
Apollo shook his massive head, droplets flying like diamonds. 'I am only lonely. The other bulls are still among the stars.'
'My grandmother tells stories about star-bulls!' Maya exclaimed. 'She says they visit children who need friends.'
Apollo's golden eyes softened. 'Then I have found the right child.' He lowered his head so Maya could pet his velvety nose. 'Would you help me return home?'
Maya nodded furiously.
That night, under a canopy of stars, Apollo taught Maya to climb onto his back. With a mighty leap that shook the palm tree, they soared into the sky. The wind sang through Maya's hair as they danced among constellations.
Apollo returned Maya safely to her garden, but he came back every sunset. Together, they discovered that friendship can bloom anywhere—even between a small girl and a star-bull.
And sometimes, if you look closely at a pool of water under the palm trees, you might just see the stars winking back.
