The Bull Who Dreamed of Swimming

Lily lived on a farm with cows, chickens, and one very large bull named Barnaby. Barnaby was huge and grumpy, with giant horns and a coat as black as midnight. But Lily noticed something strange—Barnaby always stood near the pond, watching the shimmering water with sad eyes.

One hot afternoon, Lily sat by the pond, dangling her feet in the cool water. Barnaby lumbered over and let out a long, deep sigh.

"What's wrong, Barnaby?" Lily asked, scratching behind his ears. The bull's rough hair felt like warm sunshine.

Barnaby looked at the water, then back at Lily. "I wish I could go swimming," he said softly.

Lily gasped. "Bulls can swim!"

"Not me," Barnaby hung his head. "I'm too heavy. I'll sink like a rock."

"But you're my friend, and friends help each other!" Lily grabbed a long stick and held it out. "I'll teach you. The water will hold you up—I promise!"

Every day that summer, Lily helped Barnaby practice. First just his hooves, then his legs, then his whole enormous body. Barnaby was scared at first, but Lily never gave up on him.

One magical evening, as fireflies danced above the pond, Barnaby finally took the big plunge. Splash! He didn't sink. Instead, he floated beautifully, his giant horns like two islands on the water.

"I'm doing it!" Barnaby cheered, creating waves that splashed onto the grass. "I'm swimming!"

From that day on, Barnaby became the happiest bull in the world. He even taught the other farm animals that sometimes the things we fear most can become our greatest joys.

Lily and Barnaby swam together every summer, proving that with courage and a good friend, even a bull can learn to fly—well, swim—like a fish in the water.
