The Bull Who Dreamed of Riddles

Lily loved running through the golden meadow behind her cottage, with the tall grass tickling her knees and the wind singing in her ears. Her best friend was Oliver, a boy with wild curly hair and a nose full of freckles, who always knew where to find the most interesting adventures.

One summer afternoon, while they were playing tag, Lily discovered something extraordinary. Near the old oak tree stood a magnificent bull with fur like storm clouds and horns that gleamed like polished amber. But the strangest part was his eyes—they held the wisdom of a thousand years.

"Hello," Lily whispered, stepping closer. The bull lowered his massive head gently.

"I've been waiting for you," the bull spoke, his voice like rumbles of distant thunder. "I am not what I seem."

Before their eyes, the bull began to change. His fur transformed into golden stone, his horns became elegant feathers, and his face reshaped into that of a lion with wise, knowing eyes. A sphinx now stood before them—majestic and magical.

"For three hundred years," the sphinx explained, "I was trapped as a bull because I forgot the answer to my own riddle: What is the strongest thing in the world?"

Lily and Oliver looked at each other. "Is it a mountain?" Oliver asked. "The ocean?" Lily guessed.

The sphinx shook his great lion head. "Those things are strong, yes. But they can break or dry up."

Lily thought about her grandmother's hands, how they held her when she was scared. She thought about Oliver sharing his lunch when she forgot hers. She thought about her mom staying up all night when she was sick.

"Friendship," Lily said softly. "Love."

The sphinx's golden face lit up with joy. Sparkles cascaded around him like a waterfall of light. "You've freed me!" he cheered. "Now I can return to my duty—guarding the sacred library where all stories live."

As a thank you, the sphinx gave each child a magical feather. "Whenever you feel scared," he told them, "hold this feather and remember: true strength comes from love and friendship."

Lily and Oliver ran home, their feathers safely tucked in their pockets, their hearts full of magic and the knowledge that the strongest force in the world wasn't muscles or magic—it was the love between friends.
