The Bull Who Danced With Lightning

Emma loved storms more than anything. When the sky turned purple and thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, she pressed her nose against the window, waiting. Tonight, the lightning flashed like someone taking pictures of the clouds.

Emma's grandmother had told her stories about the old wooden bull statue in their garden. "He's special," Grandma had whispered. "Some nights, when the lightning calls, he wakes up."

Emma didn't believe in magic. Not really. But that night, when a particularly bright bolt of lightning cracked the sky open, she saw something move in the garden.

She crept downstairs and pushed open the back door. There stood the bull — no longer made of wood, but covered in soft brown fur, with gentle brown eyes and golden horns that glowed like tiny moons.

"You're real!" Emma gasped.

The bull nodded. "Only during lightning storms," he said in a voice deep and warm like melted chocolate. "Would you like to go swimming?"

"Swimming? Now?"

"The best time," the bull promised. "There's something I want you to see."

Emma climbed onto the bull's broad back, and together they walked to the secret pond deep in the woods. The water glowed with an electric blue light.

In the pond, creatures were floating like fallen leaves. They looked green and bumpy, with strange lily pads growing on their heads.

"Are those... zombie frogs?" Emma asked, feeling a little scared.

The bull laughed softly. "They're not zombies. They're sleeping frogs having wonderful dreams. Watch."

A bolt of lightning flashed overhead. The frogs opened their eyes, glowing gold like tiny stars. They began to dance on the water's surface, leaping and spinning in beautiful patterns. One frog swam right up to Emma and offered her a beautiful flower from a lily pad.

"They're not scary at all," Emma whispered, taking the flower.

"Things aren't always what they seem," the bull said wisely. "Sometimes what looks scary is just waiting for someone to say hello."

Emma spent the rest of the storm swimming with the magical frogs and riding on the bull's back as he danced in the rain. When the lightning stopped, the bull turned back into wood, and the frogs returned to their peaceful sleep.

But Emma kept the flower, which never wilted. And every time she saw something strange or scary after that, she remembered: sometimes wonderful friends are hiding in unexpected places, just waiting for lightning to wake them up.
