The Bull Who Caught Stars
Lily had the wildest hair in town. It bounced around her head like a cloud of golden springs, and no matter how many times she tried to tame it with clips and ribbons, it always found a way to burst free again.
One summer evening, while playing catch alone in her backyard, Lily threw her baseball higher than ever before. She watched it soar into the sunset, disappearing into a cluster of clouds.
"Oh no!" she cried. "That was my favorite ball!"
Just then, something amazing happened. The clouds parted, and a magnificent creature descended. It was a bull – but not like any bull she'd ever seen. This bull had silvery-white fur that sparkled like starlight, and enormous curved horns that glowed with a soft, golden light.
Even more surprising, the baseball was balanced perfectly on the bull's nose.
"You throw beautifully," the bull said in a deep, warm voice that rumbled like gentle thunder. "My name is Orion. I've been watching you from the Cloud Kingdom."
Lily's hair stood on end – literally. Each golden curl reached toward the bull as if curious to meet him.
"You... you can talk?" she whispered.
"Up here, many things can talk," Orion winked. "But what I really love is baseball. Down in the starry meadows, we play every night with comets and meteors. Would you like to join us?"
Lily's eyes widened. "But... I can't fly."
Orion smiled and lowered his giant, shimmering head. "Climb onto my back. And hold tight to that wild hair of yours – it's more special than you know."
As Lily grabbed onto Orion's silvery fur, they shot upward through the clouds. Her hair flowed behind her like a golden river, shimmering and glowing. For the first time, Lily didn't wish her hair was smooth and straight. It felt powerful, like it was made of magic.
In the starry meadow, magical creatures played the most beautiful baseball game Lily had ever seen. The bases were actual stars, the players rode on constellations, and whenever someone hit the ball, it burst into fireworks.
Lily played until her arms tingled with happiness. She hit a triple off a moon-rock, slid into home past a grinning bear made of galaxies, and caught a comet-ball with her hair flowing like a golden cape behind her.
"You're a natural," Orion said as he flew her home that night. "Your hair – it's not messy. It's made of the same magic as the stars. That's why it has a mind of its own."
Lily touched her bouncing curls and smiled. She would never try to tame them again.
Every night after that, when the stars came out, Lily's hair would sparkle and twitch, ready for another adventure with Orion. And she learned that the things that make us different are often the very things that make us magical.
