The Bull Who Caught Lightning
Emma was the best spy in the whole neighborhood. Every evening, she would creep through the tall grass with her pretend magnifying glass, spying on the magical creatures that lived in her garden. She watched crickets have concerts. She spied on lightning bugs having dance parties. She even saw a frog wear a tiny crown!
One night, a terrible storm rolled in. Thunder crashed like a giant's footsteps. Lightning flashed across the sky, bright and scary. Emma worried about her little garden friends, especially the lightning bugs who were just tiny sparks themselves.
From her window, she saw something amazing. Old Barnaby the bull, who lived in the pasture next door, wasn't running away from the storm like the other animals. He stood strong in the middle of the field, his great horns pointing toward the sky.
Emma kept spying, her nose pressed against the glass. Suddenly, a huge bolt of lightning came streaking down toward the ground—right where a whole family of lightning bugs were hiding under a leaf!
But Barnaby didn't move. He caught the lightning on his horns! The bright bolt danced across his head like a glowing halo, then he shook his mighty head and sent the lightning harmlessly into the ground. Sparks flew up, not as scary lightning, but as happy little lights that joined the lightning bugs' dance.
All night long, Barnaby the bull stood guard. Every time dangerous lightning came near the garden, he caught it and turned it into something beautiful. Emma had never seen anything so wonderful.
The next morning, Emma ran to the pasture. "Barnaby!" she called. "You're a hero!"
The old bull lowered his big head and let her pat his soft nose. His eyes twinkled like the lightning he had tamed.
From that day on, Emma knew that even the scariest things could become something beautiful. And the best spies are the ones who discover magic and friendship where no one else thinks to look.
