The Bull Who Believed in Stars

Lily loved the old stone pool in her grandmother's garden. It wasn't for swimming—it was magical. On moonlit nights, the water showed reflections that weren't there. Like stars that weren't in the sky. And sometimes, stories.

One July evening, Lily tossed her baseball into the air, catching it again and again. She practiced every day, but she always missed the swing during games. The other kids laughed. "Too slow, Lily!"

She sat by the pool, tears mixing with the water. Then she saw it—a reflection of a giant bull, but not like any bull she'd seen. This one wore a baseball cap and held a bat between his hooves.

"Hey there, kiddo," the reflection seemed to say. Lily jumped. The bull's eyes twinkled like actual stars.

"I'm Barnaby," the bull said, stepping OUT of the pool like it was a doorway. He was enormous, with golden fur and spots that glowed. "I was the greatest baseball player in the sky—until I forgot something important."

"What?" Lily asked, forgetting to be scared.

Barnaby sat beside her. "Baseball isn't about hitting home runs. It's about believing you can." He tapped her chest with his nose. "You've got starlight in there, Lily. I can see it."

That night, under Barnaby's patient guidance, Lily practiced. But he taught her something strange—instead of watching the ball, she was supposed to feel it. "Listen with your heart," he said. "The ball tells you where it wants to go."

They played until dawn. When the sun peeked over the garden wall, Barnaby stepped back into the pool. But first, he pressed something into her hand—a baseball that glowed like a captured star.

"Believe, Lily. And when you need me, just look in the pool."

The next game, Lily stood at the plate, kids whispering. She closed her eyes and felt—really felt—the ball coming. It hummed against the air. She swung.

CRACK!

The baseball sailed into the clouds, leaving a trail of sparkles that only Lily could see. Her team cheered. But that wasn't the best part.

That night, she ran to the pool. Barnaby was there, grinning. "You did it, kid. You believed."

Lily realized the magic wasn't in the bull or the pool or even the glowing baseball. The magic was inside her all along—waiting for someone to help her see it.

Sometimes, the best friends come from the most unexpected places. And sometimes, all you need is someone who believes in you to help you believe in yourself.
