The Bull Who Befriended a Zombie
Barnaby was a bull with a very big heart and very soft hooves. While other bulls snorted and stamped, Barnaby liked to tiptoe through meadows, careful not to crush even the tiniest flowers. But Barnaby was lonely, for the other animals thought a bull should be fierce, not gentle.
One day, near the old apple orchard, Barnaby heard a sad groaning sound. Behind a twisted oak tree sat a creature with patchy gray fur and one ear that flopped over his eyes. It was Zed, and everyone called him a zombie because he shuffled slowly and spoke in whispers. But Zed wasn't scary at all—he was just terribly shy and a little clumsy.
"Hello," said Barnaby softly. "Would you like to play padel?"
Zed's eyes widened. "But I'm a zombie. Zombies don't play games."
"Barnaby smiled. "I'm a bull who doesn't act like a bull either. Maybe we can be different together."
They found an old padel racket forgotten by some children, and using a flat rock as their ball, they played the most wonderful game. Zed discovered that when he laughed, he didn't shuffle at all but leaped with joy. Barnaby discovered that having a friend who understood what it felt like to be different was better than fitting in.
Nearby, in a crystal pond, a wise goldfish named Goldie had been watching. She swam to the surface and said, "True friendship isn't about how you look or what others say you should be. It's about heart."
Barnaby and Zed looked at each other and smiled. They had found something more precious than gold or jewels—a friend who saw them for who they truly were.
From that day on, the bull and the zombie were the best of friends. They played padel every afternoon, and any animal who felt different was welcome to join them. Because Barnaby and Zed knew that the most magical things in life aren't what you expect, but what you discover when you open your heart.
