The Bull, The Cat, and The Pyramid Scheme

Jordan's friend Marcus had always been the hustler type, but this was next level even for him.

"Bro, trust me," Marcus said, eyes gleaming with that intensity he got whenever he'd discovered something 'revolutionary.' "This isn't just some regular thing. It's a pyramid, but like, a GOOD one. Financial freedom by seventeen."

I stared at the glossy pamphlet. PYRAMID SUCCESS SYSTEM was emblazoned across the top in aggressive all caps. Below it, a photo of grinning teens holding fistfuls of cash.

"Dude," I said. "That's literally a pyramid scheme."

"It's not a scheme! It's MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING. My cousin's friend's brother made six figures last summer." Marcus was already pulling out his phone. "I just need three people to sign up under me, and then—". I nodded, heart still hammering.

"You faced the bull," she said simply. "Most kids wouldn't even go in that pasture."

Later, as Marcus kept sending me texts about the pyramid and recruitment quotas and how I was missing out on the 'opportunity of a lifetime,' I found myself petting that barn cat, watching the bull from a safe distance. He was just doing his thing—massive, powerful, completely unbothered by whatever drama humans had going on.

The cat purred, leaning into my hand like she owned the place. And I realized: that was real confidence. Not some fake pyramid hustle built on recruiting your friends into something sketchy.

I called Marcus that night. "I'm out, bro. Not joining the pyramid."

"You're making a mistake," he insisted, already distracted—probably texting someone else about his 'revolutionary opportunity.'

Maybe. But as I hung up, I thought about that bull, that cat, the way I'd stood my ground in that pasture. Some things you can't recruit people into. Some things you have to find on your own.
