The Bull, The Bear, and Baseball

Arthur adjusted his hearing aid as his grandson Toby settled beside him on the porch swing. The old man's white hair—what remained of it—caught the afternoon sun like spun silver.

"You feeling like a zombie today, Grandpa?" Toby asked gently. Arthur had been recovering from a stroke, and some days the world moved through molasses.

"Less zombie today," Arthur managed, his voice raspy but warm. "More like a bear coming out of hibernation. Hungry for life again."

He pressed the worn baseball into Toby's hands. "Your grandmother gave me this. Fifty years ago, at our first baseball game. We ate hot dogs, laughed ourselves silly, and I knew she was the one."

Toby turned the ball over, reading the faded signature. "Did you play?"

"In high school. I was fast as a bull chasing rodeo clowns." Arthur's eyes twinkled. "But your grandmother—she was the real athlete. Could throw a strike from the porch to the mailbox."

The radio droned a baseball broadcast. Arthur closed his eyes, letting the announcer's voice transport him through decades of summer afternoons—Toby's father at bat, baby Toby wobbling toward first base, the whole family cheering like their lives depended on it.

"Grandpa?" Toby's voice cracked. "I'm scared. About getting old. About losing... everything."

Arthur opened his eyes. His grandson, this strapping young man, looked suddenly small.

"Listen to me." Arthur's voice gained strength. "I've seen bull markets and bear markets. Lost hair, gained wisdom. Watched your father grow from babe to man. What stays?" He tapped Toby's chest. "This. Love. The moments that matter."

Toby nodded, wiping his eyes.

"Besides," Arthur added, his familiar grin returning, "with your grandmother's baseball luck, you'll live to a hundred and ten. Now—wanna play catch?"

The oldest man on the block stood slowly, gripping his cane. The youngest stood beside him, baseball in hand. And for one perfect afternoon, death and time surrendered to the simple rhythm of toss and return.
