The Bull's Secret Garden
Lily lived in a cottage at the edge of Whisper Meadow. Every morning, she'd peek through her curtains at the enormous bull who grazed alone in the tall grass. His name was Barnaby, and all the village children said he was as grumpy as a thundercloud.
But Lily was curious. She decided to become a secret **spy**.
She crept through the buttercups with her homemade spyglass—a paper towel tube wrapped in sparkly ribbon. She watched Barnaby for hours. He wasn't grumpy at all! He was gentle, carefully stepping around ladybugs and lifting rabbit babies out of the way with his nose.
One afternoon, Lily followed Barnaby deeper into the meadow, ducking behind dandelions. Suddenly, the bull stopped and lowered his giant head. Behind a thicket of blackberry bushes, Lily gasped.
Barnaby was guarding a magical garden! Tiny blue butterflies landed on his horns, and baby birds nested in his ears. He nudged a baby fox toward a patch of strawberries. The bull wasn't lonely or mean. He was a protector!
"You found my secret," Barnaby said, and though his voice was deep as a cave, it was warm as honey.
Lily stepped forward. "I wasn't trying to be sneaky. I just wanted to know the real you."
Barnaby smiled—a twinkle in his kind brown eyes. "Would you like to be my **friend** and help me care for the little ones?"
Every day after school, Lily ran to the meadow. She and Barnaby fed baby birds, rescued trapped butterflies, and told stories to the fox kits. The village children soon noticed how happy Lily was and came to see why.
They discovered that Barnaby, the supposed grumpy **bull**, was the kindest guardian in the world.
Sometimes the most wonderful friends are hiding behind the biggest misunderstandings. You just need to look with your heart.
