The Bull's Secret Baseball

Lily loved watching animals. Every afternoon, she would sneak behind the old oak tree and **spy** on the creatures in Farmer McGregor's field. She wasn't trying to be sneaky—she just wanted to learn their secrets.

The most mysterious animal was the huge black **bull** named Barnaby. All the other children said he was fierce and dangerous. But Lily noticed something different. Barnaby always looked lonely, standing by himself while the cows grazed together.

One hot afternoon, Lily brought her **baseball** mitt to the field. She loved catching. Suddenly, a flash of orange darted past—a **fox**! It was the cleverest fox in the valley, known for playing tricks. But today, the fox trotted straight to Barnaby and dropped something at his feet.

Lily gasped. It was her baseball! She had lost it days ago.

Barnaby lowered his massive head. The fox barked happily, and to Lily's surprise, Barnaby nudged the ball back. They were playing catch!

Lily stepped out from behind her tree. Barnaby froze, but the fox just wagged its tail.

"You're playing baseball!" Lily whispered.

Barnaby looked at her with sad, gentle eyes. The fox brought the ball to Lily's feet. She picked it up and tossed it to Barnaby. He caught it on his horns and tossed it back with surprising grace.

For weeks, Lily, the fox, and Barnaby played every day. The other children saw them and learned that Barnaby wasn't scary at all. He had just been waiting for friends who looked beyond his size.

One day, Lily brought a bucket of fresh **water** from the spring. It was the hottest day of summer. Barnaby drank gratefully, then splashed some on Lily. The fox jumped in the puddle, and soon they were all laughing and playing in the cool water.

Lily learned something important that summer: things aren't always what they seem. A bull can be gentle. A fox can be kind. And the best adventures begin when you have the courage to say hello.
