The Bull's Rainbow Mane

Lily's hair was always a tangled mess, no matter how much she brushed it. 'Wild as a thunderstorm,' her mother said with a smile. But Lily didn't mind. She loved how her hair bounced when she ran through the meadow behind their farmhouse.

One spring afternoon, Lily discovered something extraordinary in the old barn. Behind stacks of hay sat a magnificent bull with a coat like polished copper and the most beautiful mane she had ever seen—long, silky hair that shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow.

'Hello there,' Lily whispered, approaching slowly.

The bull raised his head and looked at her with the gentlest brown eyes. She had never seen such kindness in an animal's gaze.

'I'm Fern,' the bull seemed to say without speaking, and Lily somehow understood.

Every day after school, Lily visited Fern. She brought him fresh apples and sweet clover. In return, Fern let her brush his rainbow mane. The bull's hair was magical—whenever Lily touched it, she felt warm inside, like drinking hot cocoa on a snowy day.

One afternoon, Lily's grandmother gave her a special gift. 'This was your great-aunt's hat,' she said, handing Lily a beautiful woven straw hat decorated with wildflowers. 'She said it helped her find her truest friends.'

Lily wore the hat to the meadow, and Fern's eyes widened with recognition.

'The Friendship Hat!' the bull seemed to say.

That summer, Lily learned something wonderful. Fern had once been a regular bull, but his kindness had been rewarded with magical hair that could make anyone feel loved. And the hat helped true friends find each other.

When school started again, Lily met a new girl named Mia who sat alone at lunch. Remembering Fern's lesson, Lily approached with her heart open. They became best friends instantly.

Now, whenever Lily visits Fern wearing her flowered hat, the bull bows his magnificent head. And sometimes, just for fun, Lily weaves tiny flowers into her own wild hair, hoping it will shimmer with kindness too.

Because true friendship, she learned, is the most magical treasure of all.
