The Bull's Orange Jersey
Jordan's hands shook as he gripped the padel racket. It was his first day at the prestigious Pinewood Academy courts, and honestly? He was totally low-key freaking out. The cool kids watched from the sidelines, their whispers slicing through the humid air like invisible daggers.
"Nice racket, rookie," sneered Tyler, wearing that unmistakable orange jersey that screamed "I own this place." Tyler—aka "The Bull" for his brute-force playing style—had been terrorizing the padel courts since freshman year. Now a senior, his orange-clad presence was basically law.
Jordan tightened his grip. He'd been practicing padel in secret for years, his backyard court his sanctuary from the pressure of always being the new kid. His family moved constantly, leaving him perpetually the outsider, the one trying to find his place in already-formed circles.
"Game on," the coach announced, pairing Jordan with Tyler for doubles.
Tyler rolled his eyes. "Great. I'm stuck with the newbie who probably doesn't even know the difference between padel and tennis."
Something ignited in Jordan's chest. The familiar weight of the racket in his palm, the rhythmic thud of the ball against the glass walls—this was his terrain, his language. As the game began, Jordan moved with practiced ease, his body remembering what his mind had almost forgotten from countless solitary hours.
The Bull's aggressive serves returned faster than expected. Jordan anticipated them, positioning himself perfectly. Point after point, they dominated the court, Jordan's strategic playing complementing Tyler's power shots perfectly.
"Not bad, rookie," Tyler muttered after their fifth consecutive win. His signature smirk softened into something almost like respect.
After the final game, as they sat in exhausted silence, the orange jersey beside him suddenly seemed less like armor and more like... just a shirt. Tyler tossed him a Gatorade—orange-flavored, naturally.
"You try out for the team?" Tyler asked. "We could actually use someone with actual skill."
Jordan grinned, realizing maybe he'd finally found his place. "Wouldn't miss it."
