The Bull in the Room
The iPhone buzzed on the nightstand at 3:14 AM, its screen illuminating the darkness with a text that would dismantle a decade of trust. Maya lay beside him, her breathing rhythmic and deep, unaware that Richard's hand trembled as he reached for the device.
"Meet me at the rodeo grounds. Same hat as last time."
Richard slid out of bed, careful not to disturb her. In the hallway mirror, he caught his reflection—the gray spreading through his temples, the lines around eyes that had seen too much compromise. He grabbed his old Stetson from the closet, the one Maya said made him look like a different man entirely. She wasn't wrong.
The rodeo grounds were deserted except for one figure leaning against the chutes, silhouetted against the moon. Even in darkness, Richard recognized Jenna's posture—the same way she'd lean against his desk three years ago when this began, when he was still someone who believed he could have everything.
"You came," she said, not turning around.
"What do you want?" The strain in his voice surprised him.
Jenna turned, and Richard saw she held something—an iPhone, its screen shattered. "She knows. Maya knows. That message wasn't from me."
The bull in the chute shifted, its weight massive and restless. The animal snorted, and the sound echoed Richard's own sudden realization. This whole double life had been him charging blindly, thinking he was powerful when he was really just being led toward an inevitable end.
"She left her phone unlocked," Jenna continued. "She read everything. Every message. Every photo. She knows about the hat, the rodeo, all of it."
Richard's knees gave way. He sat on the dusty ground, the Stetson in his hands. "What now?"
"That's for you to figure out." Jenna's voice softened. "I'm done being the bull in someone else's chute."
She walked away, leaving him alone with the restless animal and the weight of choices that could no longer be unmade. Dawn was breaking when he finally stood, hat in hand, knowing that when he returned to their bedroom, Maya would already be gone.
