The Bull in Orange

I stood by the punch bowl at Emma's house party, nursing a warm orange soda that matched the nervous heat rising in my cheeks. Everyone seemed so effortless in their conversations, laughing inside jokes I'd never been part of. I felt like I was constantly spying on a world I couldn't quite enter, watching from the edges while my crush Marcus moved through the room like he owned it.

That's when I heard it – someone said my name. My stomach dropped. Behind me, near the sliding glass door, Emma was whispering to Chloe.

"Lily's been acting so weird lately," Emma said, not even bothering to lower her voice. "She's always lurking around Marcus. It's kinda pathetic, right?"

I wanted to disappear. Instead, I walked out to the backyard, where Emma's dad's mechanical bull sat dormant under string lights. The irony wasn't lost on me – feeling like I'd been tossed around by rumors and insecurities all night.

"Hey." Marcus's voice came from behind me. I jumped, nearly dropping my orange soda. "You okay?"

"Yeah," I lied. "Just needed some air."

He sat beside me on the porch steps. "I saw you leave. You looked... upset."

"I'm fine," I said, then cringed at how fake it sounded. "Actually, that's bull. I heard what Emma said."

Marcus was quiet for a moment. "Emma talks too much sometimes. But you know what else?"

"What?"

"I noticed you first tonight. I was actually looking for you."

The orange soda suddenly felt like the most interesting object in my hands. "You were?"

"Yeah. I've been trying to work up the nerve to talk to you for weeks." He nudged my shoulder. "So... you want to get out of here? There's this orange grove down the road where you can actually see stars."

I thought about all the times I'd watched from the sidelines, convinced I was invisible. Then I smiled, stood up, and finally walked into my own story.
