The Bull and the Betrayal

The market had been in a bull run for seventeen months, and Elena's portfolio was swollen with the kind of numbers that made people forget their moral compasses. She stood in front of the bathroom mirror at 2 AM, picking spinach from between her front teeth—an expensive restaurant's careless garnish, a reminder of the dinner she'd shared with Marcus hours earlier.

Her iPhone vibrated on the marble counter. Another encrypted message from the whistleblower who'd been feeding her breadcrumbs for weeks. Elena had thought she was building a case against her company's unethical practices. She'd thought Marcus, her husband of seven years, was her safe harbor in the storm.

She'd been wrong about both.

The message contained a single file: audio from her own bedroom, recorded two nights ago. Marcus's voice, clear as crystal, discussing her investigation with her company's general counsel. Trading her silence for a promotion. The spinach in her reflection suddenly looked like something else entirely—a warning sign she'd ignored too long.

Marcus wasn't just her husband. He was the spy she'd been hunting.

The bull market had made everyone greedy. But Marcus hadn't wanted money. He'd wanted leverage. The audio revealed his arrangement: he'd been feeding her company information about her investigation in exchange for guarantees about his own career trajectory. He'd been playing both sides, betting on her failure.

Elena deleted the message. Then she deleted their photos. Then she called her lawyer.

The next morning, over coffee she'd brewed alone, Marcus asked if she'd slept well. He couldn't know she'd spent hours consolidating evidence—not just against her company, but against him too. She smiled, spinach-free and cold as the market correction that was coming for them both.

"Better than you'll sleep tonight," she said.

The bull run always ends. The only question is who gets trampled when it does.
