The Bronze Bull

Marcus stared at the bronze bull on his corner office desk—its massive horns sweeping upward, frozen mid-charge. Thirty years of climbing, compromising, and crushing anyone who got in his way. He was the bull. Always had been.

'You need to take better care of yourself,' Dr. Chen had said that morning, sliding a prescription across her desk. 'These vitamins aren't a substitute for actual rest.' Marcus had laughed it off, as he always did.

Now, watching the sunset bleed across the Manhattan skyline, his hand trembled as he reached for his phone. The leather cowboy hat he'd bought on a whim in Santa Fe last year sat on the conference table—a ridiculous affectation he'd started wearing to casual Fridays, desperate to prove he still had some wildness left in him. Some authenticity.

But there was nothing authentic about Marcus anymore. He was a collection of expensive habits and carefully curated eccentricities. Even the goddamn hat was a performance.

He thought of Sarah leaving him last month. 'I don't know who you are anymore,' she'd said, her voice weary rather than angry. 'But I know you're not happy. And you're certainly not the man I married.'

The bull's polished surface reflected his own face back at him—exhausted, terrified, alone.

Marcus picked up the bottle of vitamin D pills from his drawer. Doctor's orders. Maybe it was time to actually listen. Maybe it was time to stop being the bull, to stop charging through life blind to everything in his path.

He placed the hat on his head, feeling ridiculous and strangely free. The bronze bull glimmered in the dying light, and for the first time in thirty years, Marcus looked at it without seeing himself.

He picked up his phone and dialed Sarah.
